Este libro es un estudio profundo de este tema fundamental en la historia del arte del siglo XX. Comienza con la innovadora concepción pictórica de Philipp Otto Runge, cuyas pinturas de principios del siglo XIX presentaron la última forma genuina en la historia del ornamento: el arabesco. El arabesco influyó, a través del simbolismo (Maurice Denis, Paul Gauguin) y el Art Nouveau (Henry van de Velde, Gustav Klimt, Josef Hoffmann), en la transición de la pintura hacia la abstracción (Vasily Kandinsky, Frantisek Kupka, Adolf Hölzel), lo que resultó, por un lado, en una estructura geométrica de líneas no figurativas (Mondrian), y por otro, en los remolinos de Matisse y Jackson Pollock.
